Les Demoiselles d'Avignon , painted by Pablo Picasso in 1907, represents one of the most important turning points in the history of modern art. In this work Picasso completely breaks with traditional techniques, introducing a new and revolutionary visual language, which will give birth to Cubism .

The master was inspired by his visits to a brothel in Barcelona, in Via Avignone , in his youth . The painting portrays five female figures, depicted with clean lines and geometric shapes. Their faces, which are reminiscent of African tribal masks, are fragmented and stylised, showing a reality observed simultaneously from different points of view .

Picasso was not simply trying to represent reality as it is, but wanted to explore new ways of perceiving space and the human figure. Les Demoiselles d'Avignon is not only a visual provocation, but an artistic experiment that combines different cultural influences, reflecting the openness and complexity of modernity that was emerging at the beginning of the twentieth century.
